G. Matthew Brockway joined Icard Merrill as an attorney in 2008 and primarily practices in the areas of Intellectual Property Law and Land Use Law.  Mr. Brockway’s engineering background allows him draw upon his engineering knowledge and experience, as well as his and legal expertise while advising clients.

 

Mr. Brockway represents clients on a wide variety of intellectual property matters, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets.  Within intellectual property law, Mr. Brockway’s practice consists primarily of litigation, asset management, licensing, and patent prosecution.  Mr. Brockway is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and is knowledgeable about domestic and international intellectual property law and policy.  Before joining Icard Merrill, Mr. Brockway served as an intern at the World Intellectual Property Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to developing a balanced and accessible international intellectual property system that rewards creativity, stimulates innovation and contributes to economic development, while safeguarding the public interest.

 

Mr. Brockway also represents clients in an array of land use matters.  Mr. Brockway’s representation encompasses the entire land development process, from conception through final certification, and specifically includes complex land use litigation and zoning approvals.  Mr. Brockway’s experience and engineering background in residential and commercial land development allows him to apply practical engineering insight to achieve his clients’ particular goals and objectives.

Mr. Brockway received his Juris Doctor from the University of Florida, Levin College of Law in 2007.  Through specialized courses of study, he earned the Intellectual Property Law Certificate, the Environmental and Land Use Law Certificate, and the Pro Bono Certificate.  While in law school, Mr. Brockway served as Managing Editor, and subsequently, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Technology Law and Policy.  He also authored the article Microsoft Corp. v. AT&T Corp.:  Amputating the Long Arm of Patent Law with Regard to Software Patents¸ published in the June 2008 issue of the Journal of Technology Law and Policy.  Prior to attending law school, Mr. Brockway earned Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Master of Engineering degrees from the University of Florida.  At the University of Florida, Mr. Brockway was a four-year varsity athlete, a member of the Florida Blue Key Leadership Honorary, and a member of the Phi Delta Phi Legal Honors Fraternity.

Mr. Brockway is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and serves on the Licensing and Management of Intellectual Property Assets Committee, the Patent Law Committee, and the Patent Litigation Committee.  Additionally, Mr. Brockway is a member of the Licensing Executives Society.
